About TAN

The Transgender Aging Network (TAN) exists to improve the lives of current and future trans/SOFFA (significant others, friends, family and allies) elders by:

  • Identifying, promoting communication among, and enhancing the work of researchers, service providers, educators, advocates, elders and others who are interested in trans/SOFFA aging issues;

  • Promoting awareness of concerns, issues, and realities of trans/SOFFA aging among service providers, researchers, advocates, health care professionals, the lesbian/gay/bisexual and trans communities, and other relevant audiences;

  • Advocating for policy changes in public and private institutions, services, organizations, programs, etc. to provide better access for and respectful and appropriate treatment of trans/SOFFA elders; and

  • Providing communication channels through which trans/SOFFA elders can give and receive support and information.

There are three options for TAN Membership. Please visit the membership page for more details.TAN also provides fee-based training and consultation services. We can do onsite training, provide assistance in making publications and training materials inclusive, and set up one-time or ongoing expert consultations for your staff.

TAN Email Newslist

The Transgender Aging Network (TAN) email newslist is up and running! This free email service highlights both trans and mainstream news and announcements that are of particular interest to trans/SOFFA elders and those who serve, research, and love them. The newslist also networks professionals who would like support or advice for their trans/SOFFA aging research, service, and advocacy projects. To subscribe, send an email explicitly requesting a TAN email list subscription to LoreeCD@aol.com.

TAN is proud to announce the publication of the Transgender Aging Research Agenda (TARA). TARA is a categorized compilation of the questions trans people and SOFFAs have about growing older trans/SOFFA. TARA is designed to help researchers, advocates, elders themselves, and others focus their research and education efforts on the issues that most concern those who are growing older trans/SOFFA. Categories include: ethnicity/race; family; friendship/social circle; genderqueer; health; health care institutions/personnel; hormones; legal; leisure pursuits; living arrangements; mental health; mortality; retirement; sexuality; surgery; trans history; transitioning in later life; and work.

TAN also sponsors ElderTG, an on-online support group for transgender persons age 50+ and SOFFAs. For more information or to subscribe, go to http://www.forge-forward.org/tan/eldertg.htmFor more information on TAN, contact:
